If you don't have a proper rain gauge, in a pinch any straight-sided container will do. Take, for example, the wide mouth pint jar that previously held sourdough starter. The starter died and stunk up the house, so it was put outside on the front porch. Three weeks later, it's serving a new purpose: a rain gauge! I estimate that we got about 3.5 inches over the last 3 days (since there's almost an inch of sludge on the bottom). I'm grateful for every drop! Now, time to clean out this container before the mosquitos find it!
